What is a Gastric Bypass Diet

Familiarizing yourself with the gastric bypass diet will be something you have to do as part of your preop preparation for surgery. This diet is unique and is essential for recovering for surgery. It is important that you understand completely how this diet works and what is permitted and forbidden. It will also be necessary to stock your home with these foods prior to surgery.

Step 1 of the diet will last for a couple of days and will consist of clear liquid and gelatin. Step 2 will follow and will be introduced before you leave the hospital following your obesity surgery. This step of the diet consists of pureed strained foods, baby food and liquid protein drinks. Foods in this step should not need chewed. If it requires chewing, it doesn’t belong in this step.

In the early stages of recovery, protein is very important. This is what is going to help you regain your strength and energy. Sixty grams of protein should be your daily intake. Vitamins are essential in order to get the vitamins that you are not getting from food. These can be either liquid or chewable and once you get past the first few months your doctor is probably going to prescribe prenatal vitamins.

After the first 2 weeks you can begin trying out soft foods. These foods must be chewed extremely well. Your food should be liquid before you swallow it. Not doing this can lead to severe pain. Not drinking while you are eating is also very important. This can be another source of pain. After a while, you will be able to tell when what you are doing will cause problems.

By the time you have reached the third month following your surgery, you should be eating almost anything that you want in small amounts. Meat may have to be cut into small pieces and soaked to make it less course. Fats and items high in sugar may cause pain and dumping syndrome. You have to limit these items to very small amounts or eliminate them completely. Take it easy and you will soon begin to see many benefits to your new life.
