Living With High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure or HBP is caused by the pressure of the blood in the arteries being above a normal level. It is also called hypertension, and there are two different types, which are primary and secondary hypertension. In the majority of cases then the hypertension is primary, that is where there is no underlying cause for there being hypertension. Secondary hypertension is related to other problems in the body, and can have an effect on the major organs.

Hypertension is a disease that should be taken very seriously as it can be a cause of kidney failure, strokes or heart attacks. Untreated it will probably lead to that person having a shorter life expectancy. Thankfully there are many ways of bringing hypertension under control. It can be done through diet and exercise or through medication. Lifestyle changes can have a big effect on a person hypertension.

When a persons blood pressure is measured it is then checked against known healthy ranges for that persons age. These readings are done by measuring two different kinds of pressure which are the systolic pressure which is that found in the blood vessels during a heartbeat, and diastolic pressure which is that found in the blood vessels between beats. A slightly higher reading can indicate pre hypertension, while a high reading indicates hypertension.

The kind of changes that a person can make to bring their blood pressure down to more normal levels are basically changing what may be an unhealthy lifestyle for a much healthier one. Some people may be able to reduce their blood pressure to within the normal range simply by making these changes, whereas for others, if their pressure is very high then these changes may be recommended in conjunction with medication.

One measure is to decrease the amount of salt found in a persons diet, and this has been found to be very effective. Methods can include using a salt substitute, and eating more fresh vegetables and fruit, and following a diet which is low in fat and dairy products. Increasing potassium intake in the diet, by maybe eating more bananas, can help to offset the sodium.

Exercise is an important part of decreasing hypertension as it helps to increase blood flow and will also help to control weight. Exercise to strengthen the heart such as cardiovascular exercise is also good, and will decrease the resting pulse rate.

Smoking and drinking are known to increase blood pressure as well as contributing towards strokes and heart attacks, so decreasing or stopping use of these items will help decrease hypertension.

Stress is known to increase pressure, so some methods of relaxation could be tried such as yoga or meditation. Exercise can decrease stress.

Treating high blood pressure can be an expensive business if it is not caught early before the damage is done, so many governments are trying to make their populations aware of this fact as a lot of people do not know that they have this condition. They are trying to educate people to take better care of their health so that their life is prolonged.
