Rogaine / Regaine For Hair Loss And How It Really Works
Note: Rogaine and Regaine refer to the same product. The brand name Rogaine is used in the United States and Canada while the brand name Regaine is used in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.
This is one of the only hair loss treatments that has been approved by the FDA and has been proven time and time again through scientific and clinical studies to regrow hair. If you are looking for a product that will work for you, then this is a product that you can confidently try.
The drug that causes it to work is called Minoxidil. This ingredient began life in the 1980s when it was marketed as Loniten, a tablet used to treat high blood pressure. When some patients began to see hair growth on their hands, face and forehead as a side effect of using the medication, enterprising scientists went to their labs and reformulated it as a topical lotion. Their hunch proved correct and use of the lotion produced hair growth on the scalp. Soon after the product was released to the pharmaceuticals market.
Rogaine / Regaine works in around 85 per cent of users with twice a day application. It is not an overnight treatment and requires continued use to be effective. If treatment is stopped then the results will diminish over the following three to six months.
Minoxidil is a vasodilator, so it is thought that the treatment works by stimulating the blood flow to the scalp thereby improving the hair growth cycle and helping the body to produce thicker hairs from the follicle. It seems that the product helps to prolong the growth phase of the hair and keep it in the resting phase longer, before it falls out. More recent studies have also indicated that it helps the body to produce PGHS 1 (prostaglandin endoperoxide synthase-1), which stimulates hair growth.
These days the product is available for purchase from pharmacies in male and female formulas and with 2% or 5% strengths. It is a very safe product to use with only minor scalp irritation or itching reported among users.
If you begin using the product as soon as you notice hair loss, then you will experience better results than if you leave treatment until the problem is very noticeable. It sometimes works better on younger patients or when hair is thinning rather than pronounced bald spots. If your bald spot is less than 10cm wide you are more likely to experience good results.
Rogaine / Regaine is the only non prescription hair loss treatment that has consistently performed well under stringent scientific studies and has been approved by the FDA.
