Get to Know the Signs and Symptoms of Depression

Unlike many illnesses, people suffering from depression will display all the available symptoms of depression and not just one or two from the studies carried out by health care officials. Owing to the nature of depression, the symptoms are sometimes not readily visible especially by people close to the person suffering symptoms of depression.

The number of symptoms of depression is quite large so being aware of them is a positive step forward. Diagnosis however, does not stipulate that a depressed person must have every symptom before they qualify to receive medical attention.

Sadness over an extended period of time and no interest in life around them are often the first signs of depression. Early signs such as these are still the best indicators of a mental health problem especially if they are noticed early.

Everyone has things they enjoy and like to do but depressed individuals lose this interest completely for no apparent reason. One symptom follows another and a negative attitude about everything around them is just another symptom that is easy to spot.

Self-guilt can also be combined with lethargy and a feeling of low self esteem to highlight the plight of the depressed individual. How often have you heard a depressed person saying there is nothing to look forward to and known that they must be suffering from depression? So it goes on and these feelings exacerbate the situation and the depression gets worse and the sufferer cannot see any end to it.

Once you have the lost interest in anything that at one time made you happy then what do you do? Once this situation has occurred then it really does mean that something serious is happening.

This lack of enthusiasm often culminates in a complete lack of energy. A healthy mind creates a health body they say and although not always true, people with mental disorders are often found to be in poor physical condition.

A depressed person will also find it difficult to concentrate as their mind is elsewhere. Lack of attention to what is being said on or around them; depressed individuals also have trouble recalling events that may be recent.

We all know how difficult it is to concentrate when we feel tired so erratic sleep patterns may exacerbate the problems they have with concentration and memory. Just as with sleep, eating can also be affected with either the person eating too much or too little. Often when the situation has been allowed to continue, the person will have a morbid interest in death and dying but the worse aspect of depression is the effect it has on the sufferer’s health with headaches, digestive disorders and other pains being quite normal.
