Do You Have A Friend With Depression?

If you know someone with a depressive disorder, they may well need your help! While they will probably never request help, they might need it.

For somebody who has never suffered from depressive disorder it can be very difficult to understand. A lot of people still look at someone with a depressive disorder as a whiner and frequently wonder ‘what have they got to be depressed about’.

Whether an individual actually seems to have something to be depressed about or not is completely neither here nor there. For someone suffering from continual a depressive disorder, the illness is part of their lives even though they might not appear to have anything overly worrying happening in their life at the precise time.

This is really hard to identify with if you have not suffered from depression. It might feel like this person is always down and you don’t really want to be close to them anymore. Yet, this is when they need you around the most.

For somebody suffering from a depressive disorder, they often lose interest in group activities and just want to stay home and ‘mope’. This mood is extremely hard to overcome. When you have a chemical imbalance inside your brain brought on by chronic depression, it is especially difficult to overturn that imbalance. Due to this imbalance there is a lot of destructive energy within the body and the more harmful energy there is, the stronger the negative energy becomes.

It’s like a vicious circle. Negativity breeds negativity. This is why when you are in a depression that deep it is awfully difficult to get out of. You tend to feel negative feelings all day and find it awfully difficult to get those thoughts out of your head.

So though a person with depression may not desire to be social, it is imperative to go on encouraging them to be social. Invite them out with you to a movie or dinner or just drop around for coffee.

Be there to listen to them if they need someone to speak to. At the same time try to remain happy yourself to bestow that happy or positive vibe that might just boost their spirits that little bit.

Encourage them to be positive and to try and think positively. Pay attention to what they need to say and then try to show them how to maybe look at that circumstance in a different way. Every situation can be regarded in different ways and the way you look at things can make a vast difference to the outcome of how you feel about it.

People with a depressive disorder often tend to look at things in the most downbeat way so if they can be shown a new way to look at a circumstance this can be a big help in making them feel more positive.

The worst thing you can do for a friend that suffers from depressive disorder is to walk away and leave them to it’, to decide not to be their friend because they are always so downbeat.

Try to remember this is when they need you the most. By walking away, their depression could become worse.

Remember – a friend in need is a friend indeed.
