Tonsillitis is the inflammation of the pharyngeal tonsils. Simply put, it just means your tonsils are swollen. The swelling or inflammation may also include other areas of the back of the throat, such as the lingual tonsils and the adenoids. The tonsils are lymph nodes (oval shaped masses of lymph gland tissue) found on both sides of the throat. An infection of these tonsils is known as tonsillitis.

Usual characteristics or symptoms of tonsillitis involve pain in the throat and trouble swallowing. Diagnosis can be done by checking the tonsils with a tongue depressor and spatula, used in collecting a sample.

The sample taken from the tonsils will show if the infection is bacterial or viral. The most common type of bacteria that causes tonsillitis is streptococcus. An example of a viral illness that can cause tonsillitis is glandular fever, but other viral infections may cause it as well. Examples of viral causes are herpes simplex virus, the measles virus, adenovirus, cytomegalovirus, Streptococcus pyogenes (GABHS) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV).

Bacterial infections will require antibiotics, while viral infections won’t respond to it.

Usually, tonsillitis is a self-limiting condition. This just means it usually gets better without treatment, and normally there are no complications. It is a very common condition in children and young people, but it can occur at any age.

Tonsillitis may also be transmitted from one person to another via social contact, like coughs, sneezes and nasal fluids.

There are several kinds or variations of tonsillitis: acute, recurrent, and chronic tonsillitis and peritonsillar abscess.

People that complain of the following might have tonsillitis:

- Painful swallowing

- Painful mouth opening

- Headache

- High temperatures or fever

- Lack of appetite

- Vomiting

- Pain in the abdomen

- Yellow or white spots of pus on the tonsils

- Swollen lymph glands under each side of the jaw

Tonsillectomy is a surgical procedure that removes the tonsils. It is recommended for those with recurrent tonsillitis, where the disease keeps happening over and over.

Nasal polyps are small, soft, jelly-like nodules within the nasal passages. Smaller nasal polyps are quite harmless, but large ones may cause a blockage that can obstruct breathing.

Small, soft, jelly-like nodules in the nasal passageways are called nasal polyps. Small nasal polyps pose no problems, but large ones may cause a blockage that can obstruct breathing.

Knowing the early warning signs can help you get diagnosed and treated immediately. Here are 7 warning signs or symptoms that you have nasal polyps. If you experience them, inform your doctor (an ears, nose and throat or ENT specialist) right away. He can perform tests and detect your problem right away.

1. Mouth breathing – Any obstruction of the nasal passages can make you breathe through your mouth. However, if mouth breathing has become chronic, or if it is not associated with a cold, nasal polyps may be causing this.

2. Runny nose – Nasal polyps may be causing a runny nose that has no other associated symptoms. Allergies can cause a runny nose, but they may also cause present polyps to enlarge. This makes symptoms more apparent.

3. Persistent stuffy feeling – If you have a stuffy feeling in your nose, nasal polyps may be causing this problem. It can cause your passageways to be blocked, affecting one or both nostrils.

4. Chronic sinus infections – Nasal polyps may be the reason for your chronic sinus infections. These infections are more likely to happen after a cold, because nasal polyps can become infected and cause passageways to hold more mucus than normal.

5. Lessened or complete loss of sense of smell – Nasal polyps can cause loss of smell, because they cover the membranes that allows the human body to detect odors.

6. Dull headaches – If you feel a lot of dull headaches, similar to a sinus headache, nasal polyps may be the cause. Nasal polyps force pressure in the nasal passageways, triggering the headaches.

7. Snoring – Snoring has many causes, but chronic snoring is often caused by nasal polyps.

Keep in mind that only an ENT doctor can identify and diagnose nasal polyps. The above mentioned are just some early warning signs that suggest you may have them. If you have these symptoms, speak to your ENT doctor at once.

If you are looking for an air purifier you probably want it for a reason. This fact is important to remember when choosing your machine. But with so many air purifiers on the market how do you make the right choice? It can be very confusing as they all have something different to offer.

You will need to know why you want one. Do you need it for allergen removal, virus removal, odour or gas removal? What you want to achieve will guide yo as to which one you will buy. If you need to clear the air of allergens then you need an air purifier that can filter large particles such as pollens from the air (usually via a prefilter), and also the smaller particles. These smaller particles are those molds, bacteria, fumes, dust mites etc that people tend to be allergic to. Normally a HEPA filter will be sufficient for this job. It is important to note that there are smaller particles again that are known as lung penetrating particles and are the most harmfull to your wellbeing. These include viruses, some bacteria and germs, some home dirt mite allergens, cat allergens, smoke, soot, fumes, and smog.

The more severe your allergy the more serious the air purification that is required. So in this case your need will be driving you to the group or air purifiers that meet your need. For example, not everyone who is allergic to dust will react to the same degree to the allergin. Therefore if you fall under the mildly allergic group you wont need something that is more expensive and highly effective. Various air purifiers are needed for individuals suffering from multiple substance sensitivities or asthma. If an individual has asthma, it’s recommended they purchase an air purifier with a gas filtration system to manage gases and odors, which can trigger an asthma attack. People with several substance sensitivities can react to almost anything, so the correct option of air purifier is extremely essential, because this person could react towards the material that makes up the air purifier such as glue about the Hepa filtration system or out gassing from plastic parts. When dealing with gas, odor, and chemical situations, the greater concentrated the quantity of gas contamination with perhaps a high rate of recontamination, the stronger the gas filtration system needed. Should you wanted to manage general cooking odors, you would need a basic gas filter, while cigarette and cigar smoke requires a really big and powerful gas filtration system.

The location of the machine is also a consideration when selecting your machine. You need to know where you intend putting it. If it is a smaller room that is relatively sealed from outside air then a smaller machine wil be enough. If however it will go in a high traffic area where it will be working hard then a larger machine will be required.

Now you need to judge the effectiveness level of the machines and compare them. Do this by refering to the manufacturers specs. Check for the amount of air the air purifier can clean in an hour. Look also for the percentage of pollutants the machine can remove as the air passes through. For instance, if the particle count per cubic foot of air going into the air purifier is 1,000,000 and the count of particles in the air coming out is 300, than the efficiency from that machine would be 99.97%. Higher is better.

Another very handy addition would be a light indicator telling you when the filter needs cleaning or changing. Remember that the particles you are filtering are likely to be hard to see and therefore simply relying on dates and eyes to tell if they need changing is not reliable. Therefore a light would be handy indeed.

Lastly but by no means least you should compare warranty and reliability of the machines, as well as the weight and mobility. If you intend moving it around a lot then this will be very important indeed. We recommend air purifiers using the media charged filters as they are highly effective and dont emit ozone.

Everybody knows what snoring is and how it generally sounds like. Scientifically speaking, it is a rough sound created by breathing through the nose in a certain way that causes a vibration of the soft palate. The sound created is because there is an irregular passage of air at places in the mouth where there may be partial obstruction of breathing. Snoring sounds may vary from soft to loud, but is usually irritating to anyone kept awake because of it.

Snoring is not a big problem for most people. As a matter of fact, nearly everyone snores occasionally. People usually think men snore more than women do, but it can happen to anyone. Young or old, male or female… Literally anyone could be snoring and not even know it. It is believed though that men and overweight people tend to snore more often. In children, and other people, adenoids may cause snoring as well.

Snoring may be caused by other factors. While sleeping, a partial relaxation of the muscles that hold the vocal cords can happen. They end up going close together and obstruct air passage.

Snoring may also happen when a person lies on his back in a deep sleep or when unconscious. During these times, the tongue may fall back and partially closes the opening where air passes. This is what causes “stertor,” a noisy breathing that usually happens in concussions and apoplexy.

Mucus accumulation is another reason for snoring. Sometimes, it may collect in the nose or in the passages behind it, probably due to inflammation or irritation. It could also happen if the muscles of the throat and nose are abnormally tense, they can also interfere with air passing through. If the nose is blocked and the lips are very tight together, a whistling sound comes out as the air passes out.

Snoring is not that big of a deal. It seldom disturbs the person who snores. However, it can, as previously mentioned, annoy whoever else is awake. Often, changing sleeping positions will make the snoring stop temporarily.

Glue ear is a common condition where glue-like fluid collects in the middle ear, behind the eardrum. It is the most common reason of partial deafness in children. Approximately 1 out of 4 children get affected by glue ear at some stage of their childhood. Boys are at higher risk of this disease, being the most affected between ages two to five. Even so, there are still risks it can occur at later stages, including adulthood.

Unfortunately, glue ear is sometimes overlooked. There are a few warning signs however, such as temporary hearing loss and a stuffy feeling in the ears.

Glue ear is a very common disease. One occurrence predicts another. It has been known that children who have had one experience having glue ear are more likely to have recurrent episodes.

Certain other risk factors that contribute to glue ear are:

- constant inhalation of nicotine smoke

- having recurrent cough and cold

- glue ears is common in the family; and

- as a baby, the child was bottle fed rather than breast fed

The most common symptom of glue ear is having dulled hearing. Sometimes, children who are affected might end up completely deaf. Hearing loss may vary from mild to severe. If it continues, it will affect the child’s normal intellectual development.

Pain is a very uncommon symptom, but mild earache may happen sometimes. Affected children may pull at their ears if they experience pain.

Children who have glue ear have a propensity to show behavioral problems and slower speech development. These are commonly caused by the fact that their hearing is impaired.

Luckily, glue ear can be treated. In fact, most glue ears will heal on their own. However, if glue ear persists, surgery may be needed to eliminate the glue-like fluid from the middle ear and to place a ventilation tube or “grommet” in the ear drum. It sits across the eardrum, connecting the outer and middle ears, thus allowing pressure in the middle ear to become normal or be equal with the atmosphere.

More and more people are discovering the advantages of a home air conditioning system, because prices have dropped in relation to to wages over recent years. However, most people’s attitude is ‘out of sight, out of mind’. That is, until they get home from work on a sweltering hot summer’s afternoon and the air con does not work.

The most common reason for this is years of no maintenance. The only way that you will get the most from air conditioning units, as with any mechanism, is to maintain it according to the manufacturer’s recommended schedule and get it checked over by a professional every two or three years, whatever the instruction booklet says. You cannot completely eliminate the professional check up, but you can carry out the basic maintenance yourself, which will save you at least two years of fees.

Here then are my most indispensable basic air conditioning maintenance tips.

If you have a central air conditioner, wash or change the air filter roughly once a month during the hot weather season. This will help prolong the life of your air conditioning apparatus, increase its level of efficiency (thereby reducing running costs) and enhance the quality of the air in your home.

The two typical kinds of air filters are the washable steel mesh variety and the woven fibre glass type which is not reusable. These filters slide into the ductwork or blower compartment. You can further improve the performance of your central air conditioner by pulling up all the grass, bushes, flowers and picking up the debris from around the outside compressor unit.

Furthermore, if the outdoor apparatus is ever in full sunlight when it is in use, put up a small structure like a simple lean-to over it to keep it in the shade. Then it will not have to work so hard. It will also keep the snow and rain out of it during the winter. Get both the internal and external units looked at by an expert every two years.

Other basic air conditioning maintenance tips are to take the ‘top’ off your blower unit before the start of the summer and grant it some attention. Gently scrape the build-up of dust and grease on the blades of the fan, Then lightly oil the fan’s shaft and bearings so that it will turn more freely. If your fan or blower is belt driven, check the fan belt for wear, tension and alignment. Rectify as you would for a car.

The motors on most recent blower units are totally sealed and self-lubricating, but the older ones have an oil reservoir which has to be refilled every year. Check that, clean the sump, if you have one and fill up with fresh oil.

You can also scrub the coil, which is a loop of metal tubing. Vacuum it and then lightly clean it with a tooth brush and something like methylated spirits in order to degrease it. Mop up any spillage. All of these jobs can be applied to the outside unit too, because it too has a fan and a coil. Clean any cobwebs from the case’s vents too.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on many topics, but is currently involved with central air conditioning systems.

Families make the move away from wheat for many reasons. One may be digestive problems and other symptoms due to intolerance or allergies. Another is coeliac disease, a dangerous and often painful condition caused by serious intolerance to gluten. Though wheat is not its only source, gluten free recipes will necessarily be wheat free.

Wheat is just one of a number of natural foods that contain gluten. Spelt, kamut and barley are also offenders. This means that wheat sensitive individuals who can process gluten can use these products, but coeliac sufferers cannot. Other sources include baking mixes, even baking powder.

Your best bet is to empty cupboards and start again if the situation is serious enough. One of the first items to purchase if you long for homemade breads and muffins will be xanthum gum, guar gum or pre-gel starch. These help keep ingredients together in place of gluten, which would have done the job in the case of wheat flour recipes. Your supermarket may stock these or order them in. If not, health food stores are likely suppliers.

They will also increasingly stock a variety of safe flours. These include soy, potato, amaranth and tapioca. Compare these with all-purpose flour and you will see they are more dense, requiring different treatment.

This will mean that trying to create something identical to a recipe requiring wheat flour will not result in an exact replica. Your cakes, muffins and cookies will often feel heavier. Their texture will include the grainy or dense quality noticed in the uncooked product. Mixing flours together sometimes works better than working strictly from one particular variety.

Another way to add lightness involves a small science experiment. Kids especially appreciate watching chemical reactions. Combine yogurt with baking powder, then let the mixture stand for a few minutes. Their volume will increase substantially. When you fold this puffy mixture carefully into a muffin batter, for example, the result will be fluffier muffins. If you do not have yogurt, try sour cream, buttermilk or soured milk.

Thankfully, many of your favorite recipes will require little or no adjustment. Just be careful when thickening sauces or puddings. Another potential for trouble arises when coating chicken pieces or making hamburger dishes such as meatloaf or meat balls. Instead of bread crumbs, be sure to substitute either special bread or corn and rice-based cereals. When dredging your meat prior to cooking, select from your many gluten free flours.

Many gluten free recipes can taste absolutely dreadful as I’m sure you’ll be aware if you have a gluten allergy. Allergydiet.co.uk provide a variety of gluten free recipes, including gluten free bread recipes that have become extremely popular, purely on the strength of the recipes themselves.

Did you know that having mold in your residence can bring about sinus infections and other issues like headaches, scratchy throat and hypersensitive reactions? If you have mold inside your home and someone you love suddenly show these signs, you may have to put everything else on hold and get rid of the mold quickly. Cleanliness is a priority in every home, and if you have mildew in the building, being fussy about hygiene ought to be a priority.

How to Start Eliminating mold?

Moisture and darkness can be a factor to the spread of mold. To begin looking for mildew inside your house, check under your sink and in places where the roof leaks, there is a plumbing leak and the bathing room. Damp carpets should also be checked. To be specific, wood that often gets sprayed with water could be infested by molds. Cleaning mold must always begin with fixing the plumbing and the leaky roof. When you have done this, you can start looking for and washing the mold-infested places.

Small Space Cleaning

If you discover that you have mold in a small area in your home, make sure you clean the area at once with bleach solution. Make sure you get rid of all the sooty black things on the wall or the floor, as mold can easily replicate if not cleaned properly. bleach should be adequate to exterminate the fungi, but make sure the mold does not come back by airing the room and making sure you keep all your surfaces spotless. If the mold has seeped into wood, carpet or drywall, you will need to clean the area with a biocide.

Large Area Cleaning

Water leaks, pipes bursting, heater smash up… you name it, it happens to any home owner! But the problems don’t stop after you have mended the leak or replaced the water heater. If you are not meticulous enough and you leave the water on the floor or on the walls to disappear by itself, you may need to deal with a large scale mold problem a few weeks after the leak was fixed. Cleaning mold in a large space may be too overwhelming for an ordinary home owner, and you may have to hire a specialist.

First, you want to get rid of laminate flooring if you suspect that water has seeped into the floor. Check for wet spots on the wall, as the mold could be developing beneath the wallpaper or the insulating covers. Pay close attention to the wooden floors and carpets. If you left them there to dry up, you may just find the whole area beneath them to be covered with mildew. Strip off all the flooring covers and clean up the area with bleach. Make sure you’ve dried and aired out the room before you clean with bleach. Avoid inhaling the mold spores by wearing a mask.

While bleaching is sufficient, you can never be sure you got them all. If you want a thorough clean up, you need to make an investment decision and employ a professional mold inspector. These specialists can tell you where mold often breeds. They can take a look at your home and suggest which wall covers should be stripped, and which room has the most mold. What you actually want to keep away from is mold reappearance. Imagine cleaning your house only to discover six months later that the mold is back.

A HEPA filtration system in your AC will help you clean the air and eradicate dried mold particles. Checking your ventilators and AC is also one of the ways to get rid of mold from your house. These ventilators permit the air you breathe to circulate, which means you have to be certain that the air that goes around your house is free from mold spores.

There’s nothing unusual about the cough. There’s dry cough, whopping cough, wet cough. You have coughing fits, and you fake a cough to save you from an unpleasant situation, or you throw dagger looks at someone who coughs to your face with wild abandon. But really, there seems to be a lot more you many not recognize about the cough.

Cough is common chiefly because it circulates fast. Faster than an average person is how fast cough travels. Imagine, cough can travel at 60 miles an hour!

Here’s one amusing information about the cough: snail slime can cure it! Being commercialized in Chile as a remedy for cough is snail sludge. The proprietor of the snail farm says that antibiotics are contained in these slimey secretions. Thus, in Chile, at least, there’s a cough remedy from snail gunk, in strawberry and avocado flavors.

But long before the snail and its goop, over-the-counter and prescription cough syrup formulations were derived from addicting substances… or didn’t you know? Yes, drugs were handed freely then, even to minors! Opiates and heroine were the root of cough syrup in the 1800s!

Seemingly intertwined were the fates of cough syrup and jello. Having decided to branch out into something else, Pearl B. Wait closed his cough syrup manufacturing plant. Next, he presented the world with Jello in fruity flavors, an improvement of the nasty-tasting gelatin.

Another not-so-known trivia about the ordinary cough is that it actually induced… murder?! Yes, in 1799, Napoleon was mulling whether to liberate his 1,200 Turkish prisoners or not. But as he was coughing, he exclaimed “Ma sacr toux!” meaning “My darned cough!” But his soldiers misheard, and thought he said, “Massacrez tous!” meaning, “Kill them all!” And that they did…

Does coughing bring on hearing disability, too?

If you have persistent problems with cough get the best treatment from the expert. Sleep apnea can be cured once and for all, too.

Let us talk about Science for now. Proteins, known as IgE antibodies, are manufactured by our immune system as our in-built protection. These antibodies work by preventing things that can make us sick from invading our bodies.

Today, the discussion will center a little bit on Science. Proteins, known as IgE antibodies, are produced by our immune system as our in-built protection. These antibodies work by preventing things that can make us sick from invading our bodies.

When an individual has allergy to numerous things, his or her immune system works in order to produce antibodies that fight the effects of these allergens. Sometimes, the immune system goes into overdrive and manufactures too much antibodies that it triggers the release of histamines even if there are no actual allergens that come in contact with the person. These histamines can actually cause symptoms of sensitive reactions if these are released in the bloodstream.

Animal fur, dust, pet dander, insect stings, spider venom, pollen, and pet dander can be causes for an sensitive reaction. Well, you probably figured it out by now that the reason you can’t stop getting the wheezes when your girlfriend’s Chihuahua is nearby is because you’re sensitive to its fur.

So, aside from constant wheezes, what are the other indicators of allergy? Bear in mind that allergic reactions can appear in a variety of ways in one individual to the other; it would for the most part depend on what particular allergen causes the reaction. One of the most common signs of an sensitive reaction is the slight itching of the skin. Other people will experience a breakout of rashes or hives. Nonetheless, sensitive reactions should be closely monitored, considering that there are people who would suddenly go into anaphylactic shock (a fatal condition) when they come in contact with known allergens.

Below are some examples of allergens and the reported indicators they cause in people who are allergic to them.

allergic rhinitis (hay fever): Most people who suffer from allergic rhinitis will have itchy and runny noses; swollen, watery eyes; and nasal congestions.

Food allergy: The signs are a tingling feeling around the mouth; swelling of the lips and face; constriction of the throat; hives; and anaphylaxis.

Drug allergy: People who are allergic to some components of certain medications can suffer from hives, itchy skin, puffy face, and/or anaphylaxis.

In order to prevent an sensitive reaction, one should thwart anything that triggers the allergy. Most signs of sensitive reactions can be eased by taking medications such as antihistamines. For allergic reactions that do not respond to antihistamines, however, physicians could recommend a series of anti-allergy shots known as immunotherapy.

Consult a qualified ENT specialist for your hearing loss and cough problems.
