One of the most pervasive problems that I see taking care of sick people is recurrent sinus problems. This kind of problem can happen from many different sources. In many cases there is more than one source or cause of the chronic sinus infection.

One of the biggest causes that I see are allergies. These seem to cause the problem by actually causing an allergic reaction in the nose which causes the lining to swell up. People generally understand that allergies are not a fun thing to have. Even to people that know a lot about it, allergy is complicated so the treatments can be complicated. One thing that can help is allergy shots. Unfortunately these can take months to work.

I have discovered that when allergy is playing a role in the chronic sinus problem, one of the best things that can be done is to use a saline nasal spray to irrigate or wash out the passages of the nose. This decreases the amount of stuff that the person is reacting to. This in turn decreases the swelling in the nostril.

Now if it is my nose I would much rather be using a saline nasal spray to treat the symptoms than getting shots every week. Who wants to get shots every week (or month)? Plus, the saline nasal spray can work very quickly when it is used for allergy conditions of the nose.

People who deal with chronic nasal allergies understandably feel lousy at times, sometimes most of the time. Over the years I have concluded that a good saline nasal spray can bring relief to the sufferer. So I have come to suggest this strategy as the best treatment for chronic allergies.

In summary, many people deal with chronic sinus infections. These infections do seem to have more than one possible cause. The cause frequently is related to allergies. Fortunately nasal allergies can be treated with saline nasal spray quite effectively and by doing so you can decrease chronic sinus infections.

Recently I have read an argument that has been promoted that to get the benefit of using a nasal saline solution in the nose, you have to push the solution into the nasal passages under pressure. The folks who promote this idea think this is far better than just sniffing the nasal saline solution or using it as a gentle mist spray.

In my personal opinion, this is entirely incorrect. Although pushing the solution into the nasal passages under pressure can have favorable results, it has some problems. When people have either allergy problems or a sinus infection, mucus can plug the sinus opening and therefor block off the sinus.

When you irrigate the nose under pressure, you might dislodge the plug– or you might drive it more into the sinus cavity. Now if you drive it more into the opening of the sinus you have made matters worse. Not only that, it is much more uncomfortable when you irrigate the nasal passage under pressure with a nasal saline solution compared to the gentle sniffing of a nasal saline solution or the gentle spray from a saline nasal spray solution.

A much better (and more comfortable) choice is to put some of the solution into your hand, and placing your nose at the correct angle, sniffing it into your nose, as apposed to driving the mucus plug further into your already pained nose. Visit my blog to learn the correct position to sniff the nasal saline solution from your hand.

When done properly, air is mixed in with the solution, and this causes a turbulence which gently irrigates the inside of the sinus cavities in a better way. The turbulence cleanses the inside of the sinus cavities in addition to the irrigation of the nasal saline solution.

So in summary you have some very different options. But not a lot of options. You can use a gentle approach learning how to sniff a nasal saline solution from the palm of your hand without needing any other equipment, or you can have an irrigation system that requires equipment and is more uncomfortable. Yours to choose. Sure, you have to learn the correct technique with the “sniffing”– but it takes all of 30 seconds to do that.

So is this a joke? Is there really a connection between running faster and having "clean nose"? I know it does sound like a joke but actually there is a very direct connection between Saline Nasal Spray and being able to run faster.

So is this a joke? Is there really a connection between running faster and having “clean nose”? I know it does sound like a joke but actually there is a very direct connection between Saline Nasal Spray and being able to run faster.

The connection between saline nasal spray and running better is actually a pretty direct one even though it may not seem so at first glance. Here’s the connection. I am a running instructor. I help to teach a running form called “Chi Running” which has been gaining in popularity. What we have discovered is that the alarmingly high running injury rate that is usually associated with running is almost completely eliminated with learning Chi Running.

Lots of people every year get an injury of some sort while they are running. My goal as a Chi Running instructor is to eliminate these injuries and eliminate the setting that caused the injuries. One of the surprising things that has come up through the study of breathing is that how you breath can really affect the likelihood of an injury. So how is this all connected?

It may seem like an indirect connection but it is definite that how you breath affects how you move. Breathing through your nose activates a part of your nervous system that just causes the heart to beat slower. Breathing through your nose creates a limit on how much oxygen is available. If there is a “shortage” you will simply slow down. Do you see how this can affect your likelihood of an injury? If you give in and start mouth breathing (or mouth “gasping”) you will end up going faster than your system is prepared to handle which means you’re more likely to get tired or to get sloppy—this equals an increased risk from running. .

So what’s the secret connection? Where is the magic “decoder ring”? Here it is: Nasal saline solution will help the nose be a lot more open especially if you use it all the time, It does this by helping to irrigate out of the nose “junk” that you could be reacting to. Well lots of people have allergies and lots of people react to the junk that’s in the air which can make it much more difficult to breath through your nose. So even if you wanted to breath through your nose, you might not be able to without a little help. We want to show you 2 things here: 1) the tremendous connection between health in the sinuses and nasal saline solution, 2) how easy it is to use a good nasal saline solution on a regular basis in your nose.

So there you have it– there’s the connection between saline nasal solution and running faster (running without injury). The saline nasal solution and spray makes it easier for you to breath through your nose. If you breath through your nose you are much more likely to run at the pace that your fitness level is ready to do. So clearly if you can use a simple strategy to keep your nose fully open while your run, you can really have less injury because your’re running at your best pace.

When people go shopping for treatments for their nasal problems they encounter quite a few options. So many options it's hard to say which is the best. Some of these treatments are aimed at getting a saline nasal spray up the nose.

When people go shopping for treatments for their nasal problems they encounter quite a few options. So many options it’s hard to say which is the best. Some of these treatments are aimed at getting a saline nasal spray up the nose.

Of all the treatments one might buy in the store surely the most simple is nasal saline spray. Or at least it should be simple! First you need a saline solution that is safe for the nose— water and salt in most cases- and unfortunately if you’re going to sell your product in the store you often need a preservative to keep it safe from bad germs. In fact most of the sprays that are for sale in the store will have preservatives in them. That definitely moves it away from being simple “saline nasal spray”.

Some people don’t seem to think too much negative about having powerful chemicals being sprayed into the nose. But then some people minimize the various chemicals that pollute our whole environment. The assumption is that these foreign chemicals are neutral on the body. In fact they are not. And in particular the preservatives that are sprayed into the nose have an irritating effect on the cells that line the nasal passages. Is this a surprise to anyone? And unfortunately while the preservatives are having a negative effect on the nasal lining, they aren’t doing much to kill the bad germs that are already in the nose!

Not only do the store bought strategies have chemicals that are bad for the lining of the nose, they employ devices to get the saline “up there” that aren’t as good as a “lo tech” approach. You will read in some places that sniffing saline nasal solution from the palm of your hand “doesn’t work”. Don’t believe this opinion. They don’t know what they are talking about.

I have discovered over more than 30 years of medicine that the best way to get saline nasal solution up your nose is to sniff it from the palm of your hand. To be sure there is a technique that I”ve developed over the years that makes it work a lot better. I call it the “Lo-tech, No-tech” strategy for nasal irrigation. You can learn about it on my blog.

In summary, if you combine the right ingredients in making a good nasal saline solution (that can also be used as a saline nasal spray if you wish) and use that Lo tech but wonderful tool, the hand (that is, Lo tech in that it is not made by people), you will have amazing results in dealing with all chronic nasal symptoms. Oh and don’t forget– you get to lose the preservatives.

The reason that I am writing this article is to help you understand the things besides nasal saline spray or nasal saline solution that will help you have good nasal health. After all, when your nose isn’t happy your body isn’t happy. Part of the concept of this article is to emphasize that things that are healthy for the body are also healthy for the nose.

There are a lot of different issues that affect the health of the nose. I think that a very important issue is the general nutrition of the body. Many people don’t think about this, but the nutrition you throw at your body affects every single cell in your body. So we can say that it affects every single cell in your nose. If the cells in your nose aren’t working well, your nose won’t work well. Even if you are using a good nasal saline spray, it won’t work nearly as well if your cells have bad nutrition.

So the nutrition of the body does directly affect the cells of the nose. It should be obvious to us that the body’s health affects the health of the nose and so nutrition to the body affects the nutrition of the nose. In spite of this obvious connection it is typical that people with chronic nasal problems or chronic sinus issues pay little attention to how and what they eat. If you eat junky food your sinus problems are going to be worse.

There are a lot of nutrients that can be supplemented in addition to taking the time to eat better. By saying the word “supplement” I imply that the nutrient ought to be in the diet to start with. Unfortunately for many people who do supplement their diet with vitamins and other nutrients, there is often not much of these good nutrients present in the diet to start with. This is a recipe for failure. So even if you are using a good nasal saline solution on your nose every day you are undermining

There are over 50 key nutrients that are useful and helpful to supplement and all of them directly or indirectly play a roll in the immune function of the body. If any one of them are low, there is a bad effect on the body’s immune function. We are beginning to understand this more and so we have a lot of information on a few nutrients and a lot of research available to support the supplementation of a few nutrients. But it is likely that all of the nutrients that are crucial to health can be useful to the body when supplemented.

So as a summary, there are many different things that affect the health of the nasal passages and the sinuses. Even though one is more likely to think about nasal saline solution when you’re having symptoms, I believe the most important of these various aspects of having a healthy nose is nutrition. So get your nutrition right if you want to have a healthy nose.

The purpose of this article is to review some recent research on chronic sinusitis. In this research they looked at whether it made a difference in the treatment and control of symptoms in chronic sinusitis whether saline irrigation was used or saline spray.

Chronic sinusitis is a condition where a low grade infection is going on in the sinuses. The symptoms can be pretty severe or they can be so mild that the person just thinks they have allergies. The infection may go on for weeks or months or even years.

The reason that saline irrigation is even being studied is that the sinus infection really can’t get better if the sinus openings can’t be cleared of the stuff that is blocking them. This “stuff” might be secretions and often are very thick and hard for the body to move. The presumption is that these secretions can more easily be moved if the area is irrigated virorously.

The researchers were interested in understanding not only does it help to use a nasal saline solution to irrigate out the nose and therefore to possibly remove some of the blockage of the sinus, but they also wanted to know whether the volume of solution made a difference. In fact, did it make a difference whether the nasal saline solution was irrigated liberally or just sprayed up into the nose?

What the researchers found could be divided into two different conclusions. The first conclusion is that it does indeed make a difference in the treatment of chronic sinus infections if you use a nasal saline solution to treat a chronic sinus infection. Very importantly the researchers also found that it did make a difference whether you used the saline solution as an irrigation rather than using it as a nasal spray.

So in summary when it comes to a chronic sinus infection there is a definite benefit to using a good nasal saline solution. And it makes a difference to use the solution as an irrigation tool rather than just spraying it up into the nose. So, based on this research if you have chronic symptoms you will definitely benefit from frequent nasal irrigation.

One of the people I saw today asked me about the different ways to deliver saline solution into the nose. She wanted to know why it was better to sniff it from the palm of the hand rather than using a squirt bottle to spray the solution into the nose.

I want to be clear that it’s not a bad thing to spray the salt water solution into your nose using a spray bottle. I just think that you achieve more when you sniff it from your hand. Using the spray bottle is a great way to moisturize the nose, and this is particularly useful during the winter when the house humidity can get as low as the desert, around 3%.

But there usually is not enough solution being used to really “mobilize” secretions that might be plugging up the sinus openings when you use a nasal saline spray in the usual way. It’s enough to make the nose “run” a little bit and, as I said, it does help to moisturize the lining.

The person who uses the strategy of sniffing the saline spray from the hand has a completely different effect on the nose. The amount of solution going into the nose is much more than if the spray is used and this has an inevitable effect of removing secretions and mucus that is plugging up the sinus cavities. This essentially opens up the sinuses. I believe this decreases the odds that the sinuses will get infected with bacteria.

There is an exception to what I just said about using the nasal saline spray as an alternative. If you spray 10- 20 sprays up each nostril while you keep sniffing the saline, you will also mobilize secretions and perhaps help to keep the sinus openings clear of mucus secretions. It’s still not as good as the hand held irrigation from sniffing from your hand, but it’s better than just the moisturizing effect.

So, in summary, the best way to really mobilize secretions that might be blocking a sinus opening is to use large volumes of saline and to sniff it from the palm of your hand. This will work the best if you use the right technique. You can get a picture of that technique from my blog.

Unless you are blessed with living in a rather pristine environment you know that a lot of the time you are breathing air that is not so healthy. In fact a lot of the time you breath air that has a bunch of stuff in it. This dust in the air has some rather predictable effects: it irritates the nose and it causes swellling of the nasal passages.

There is kind of a cascade of events that happens when the nose starts reacting to “dirty air”. These things include swelling of the nose, a feeling like the nose is “stuffy” and often reaches the point where it’s just easier to breath through the mouth. If you remember ever having to breath through your mouth for an extended period of time you know that that was no fun.

Without trying to sound too dogmatic I think there is really only one good “solution” to this problem: wash the stuff out of the nose. This has all of the positive virtue of making sense but still a negative because of the different opinions as to how this can best be done. Should it be salt water? if so, how much? How strong should it be?

If the dirty stuff that is inhaled into the nose is not irrigated out it’s not as if it will stay there forever. The body does have a very good self cleaning system and stuff is eventually slowly washed out by the body’s irrigation system. However for many people they are inhaling this bad “stuff” faster than the body is washing it out.

So it is very important that you have a strategy to get the “stuff” out of the nose if you want to have a healthy nose. If you don’t have a good strategy, I suggest using a home made solution because it not only works well, you have the added benefit of having a solution that doesn’t have preservatives in it.

Why is it important to use a system that doesn’t have preservatives? Well unfortunately the preservatives themselves cause irritation to the nose and this irritation is enough to itself cause swelling. So when you use a home made solution that is free of preservatives you get the best of the irrigating and cleaning effect of the solution and at the same time you avoid the bad effects of the preservatives. This is a winning combination!

At first glance it may not be apparent why there would be a connection between a nasal saline solution and asthma. Here is the connection: asthma is aggravated by chronic sinus infections. Sometimes asthma is actually caused by a chronic sinus infection. How does this happen? Well actually we don’t know why this connection exists. But it does. What we do know is that in somebody who has a tendency toward asthma they will have an aggravation of the symptoms of asthma with any type of sinus infection, acute or chronic.

First it might be helpful to talk about sinus infections. They come in 3 flavors: acute, sub-acute and chronic. Usually it is not too difficult to figure out when somebody has an acute sinus infection. They tend to be fairly sick and they have a lot of head symptoms. They often have facial pain. If they have a tendency towards asthma they will be coughing quite a bit and the cough will tend to be a dry cough without having a lot of secretions that are being moved by the cough.

The next kind of sinus infection is “subacute”. This is what happens if an acute infection doesn’t resolve fairly quickly. The infection becomes a little more entrenched and more low grade. It may have a lot of dry coughing. It likely has a lot of post nasal drainage but the secretions are abnormal.

A chronic sinus infection is one that has been going on for quite a while. In fact the person with it will often have forgotten their acute infection and assumed they had gotten better. But they have this nagging cough and they have nasal congestion that is not too bad– in fact these folks often think they are dealing with chronic allergies.

So how does a nasal saline solution have anything to do with these various sinus infections? Well first of all the use of a good nasal saline solution will help decrease the symptoms in all three of these types of sinus infections. This is no small thing: being able to decrease symptoms that are bothering a person day and night is a fantastic blessing. The big thing though is that if used correctly and aggressively the nasal saline solution or spray can help keep the acute sinus infection from progressing to a chronic sinus infection.

How does this happen? If you can get the sinuses to open up and “drain”, there is a lot better chance for the infection to clear. That’s exactly what a nasal saline solution can do. When used correctly the saline solution helps the sinuses to open up and stay open and decrease the chance of becoming a chronic infection. It is the chronic sinus infection that tends to cause asthma. So in this fashion the use of a good saline nasal spray or solution can help decrease the development of asthma. (Especially if you use a saline solution without preservatives!) This is a good thing!

One of the most annoying things that people deal with is having difficulty breathing through their noses. It’s just amazing how much we are unaware of the nose and how air flows through it until it doesn’t work so well. All of us can think of sleepless nights where the nose was so stuffed that we just couldn’t sleep. Or going through the day with the nose just open enough that some air gets through but you have to “work” at it!

There are two main causes for having a stuffy nose: chronic allergies and chronic sinus infections. I have noticed that nasal allergies are more common than they used to be. More and more people seem to be troubled by allergies and the result is nasal swelling and trouble breathing through the nose. The pharmaceutical industry has taken advantage of this by a proliferation of treatments.

Without getting into all of the chemistry of allergy, the allergic process in the nose causes and increase in swelling and an increase in abnormal nasal secretions. People are much more aware of these changed secretions than what they are normally making. It just becomes a matter of space– there isn’t enough space for even air to get by all the swelling and secretions.

Chronic sinus infections are another cause of swelling of the nasal passages. Unlike with allergies, this kind of swelling can be from something going on in the sinus yet causes the adjacent nasal passages to swell. It is a less direct cause of swelling but it appears that infection still causes swelling in the nasal passages.

What would you do if you could have a nasal “solution” that is effective in treating both allergies and skin irritation? It would simplify your life. And even though we can’t say that there is a “cure” happening –or when”’

We have a fantastic nasal solution that has helped many folks with either frequent allergies or chronic sinus infections breath more without difficulty and therefore feel better.

The recipe has a bit of secrecy with it because it is patented. I can tell you this: it’s the first nasal anitoxidant available.

I decided not to sell this product but rather to make the recipe available for people to make at home. I did this because I was wanting to make a solution that was preservative free and the only way I could make that happen was if the patient made the solution at home. So you can make this solution any time you need it and at the same time you’re minimizing the exposure to chemicals such as preservatives. Preservatives can cause a lot of problem with the nose.
