If you know someone with a depressive disorder, they may well need your help! While they will probably never request help, they might need it.

For somebody who has never suffered from depressive disorder it can be very difficult to understand. A lot of people still look at someone with a depressive disorder as a whiner and frequently wonder ‘what have they got to be depressed about’.

Whether an individual actually seems to have something to be depressed about or not is completely neither here nor there. For someone suffering from continual a depressive disorder, the illness is part of their lives even though they might not appear to have anything overly worrying happening in their life at the precise time.

This is really hard to identify with if you have not suffered from depression. It might feel like this person is always down and you don’t really want to be close to them anymore. Yet, this is when they need you around the most.

For somebody suffering from a depressive disorder, they often lose interest in group activities and just want to stay home and ‘mope’. This mood is extremely hard to overcome. When you have a chemical imbalance inside your brain brought on by chronic depression, it is especially difficult to overturn that imbalance. Due to this imbalance there is a lot of destructive energy within the body and the more harmful energy there is, the stronger the negative energy becomes.

It’s like a vicious circle. Negativity breeds negativity. This is why when you are in a depression that deep it is awfully difficult to get out of. You tend to feel negative feelings all day and find it awfully difficult to get those thoughts out of your head.

So though a person with depression may not desire to be social, it is imperative to go on encouraging them to be social. Invite them out with you to a movie or dinner or just drop around for coffee.

Be there to listen to them if they need someone to speak to. At the same time try to remain happy yourself to bestow that happy or positive vibe that might just boost their spirits that little bit.

Encourage them to be positive and to try and think positively. Pay attention to what they need to say and then try to show them how to maybe look at that circumstance in a different way. Every situation can be regarded in different ways and the way you look at things can make a vast difference to the outcome of how you feel about it.

People with a depressive disorder often tend to look at things in the most downbeat way so if they can be shown a new way to look at a circumstance this can be a big help in making them feel more positive.

The worst thing you can do for a friend that suffers from depressive disorder is to walk away and leave them to it’, to decide not to be their friend because they are always so downbeat.

Try to remember this is when they need you the most. By walking away, their depression could become worse.

Remember – a friend in need is a friend indeed.

Having depression is not a nice way to live but there is help available. Visit Depression Symptoms for more information on depression and how you can treat it.

What is a panic attack? Basically a panic attack is when for some reason your body overreacts to a situation and goes into panic mode. Panic is a normal bodily response when put in a dangerous situation but with panic attacks they tend to happen when panic is really not needed.

Panic attacks can be brought on by a build up of stress, anxiety and depression and once a person experiences an attack they tend to have a big fear of it happening again. This fear in itself is enough to bring on another attack and then the panic cycle begins.

Symptoms of panic attacks are difficulty breathing, dizziness a racing heart and more. The good news is that panic disorder is treatable and it is possible to overcome it completely. The sooner you begin treatment the sooner you can get your life back.

Panic disorder is then when a person starts suffering from recurring panic attacks happening on a regular basis and really interrupting your life. When attacks start affecting your life to this extent then you have full blown panic disorder.

Different panic attacks treatments will work for different people so if you try one treatment and it doesn’t work, don’t give up, a different treatment might work well. Treatments are usually medications, therapies and/or psychotherapy. Some people even turn to alternative treatments such as yoga, relaxation and meditation.

There are anti-anxiety medications like Xanax, Klonopin, Ativan and Benzodiazepines which can help to reduce the symptoms of panic attacks and also reduce your general anxiety levels, which will help to reduce panic. These medications should be taken with caution as they can become very addictive. Other medications that are often used are antidepressants which can improve your general happiness and therefore help to reduce your panic attacks.

One of the most successful panic attacks treatment is cognitive behavioural therapy as this treatment gets right to the core of the problem. This therapy delves into your mind and tries to find the cause of your attacks, you might have to discuss your fears and anxieties to be able to deal with them and move on. This therapy will teach you how to deal with your fears and also how to deal with the way that your mind reacts during a panic attack. Basically you are retraining your mind to react differently and more rationally.

Exposure therapy involves facing your fears and confronting them head on. You would do this in a controlled environment and at whatever pace is necessary for you. This can be quite scary but is also a very effective method of treatment.

Alternative therapies like meditation, relaxation therapy and even yoga are a great way to deal with your panic disorder. Yoga can help with many ailments and does wonders for mental conditions like panic attacks. Yoga helps to calm the mind and body and relieve stress. As stress can play a large role in panic disorder, reducing stress can also play a large role in overcoming the disorder.

Some people may only need one of these treatments, but many will find a combination of some of the treatments works very well. Medication on it’s own is not a good treatment as although it may reduce the symptoms, it is not addressing the problem and therefore not helping to overcome panic disorder completely. So if you are using medication I do suggest that you combine it with some sort of therapy to get the best results.

Panic attacks are terrible, scary things that nobody should have to put up with. YOU don’t need to put up with them, seek help today and start working toward taking back control of your life.
