Modern society helps make more reasons to be depressed. Luckily, you will find more effective ways to do something about it nowadays too. But it really is infuriating when someone believes you should just have the ability to snap out of it – as if you might be just having a stomach ache or something.

And sometimes you may encounter people in your life like my friend, John, who seems over-the-top enthusiastic and cheerful everyday. He would be irritating if I didn’t think about “Ned Flanders,” the Simpsons cartoon character who is similarly upbeat all the time.

What is “Clinical Depression?” Clinical depression has a lengthy list of symptoms, but quickly it just indicates you feel so down for a minimum of two weeks that you can’t do the things you normally do.

You likely already realize that depression is unique for different people. But the most severe kind of clinical depression is called MDD or “Major Depressive Disorder.” But nobody starts out with MDD. They slide into it after some time, so you should not permit yourself to get that far down without first looking for help.

But the most typical symptoms of depression are: Sleeping too long or not long enough just about every night. Over-eating or under-eating constantly. Low energy, the feeling of being fatigued all the time. In addition to those, certain things such as inexplicable headaches, stomachaches, and so forth normally go with the other symptoms.

So how do you deal with depression properly? The simple answer is with a blend of external help and self-help. We’ll review both of these individually below:

Outside Support: The outside support should start with a search for a qualified health care provider in your town – somebody who is educated and experienced in dealing with depression. The best health care provider is going to be skilled in a lot of unique treatment methods, which means he or she doesn’t have a background of only dispensing medication. Some doctors, for example, seem to always push for surgery over physical rehabilitation.

…So what you’d want to do is ask about a ‘depression doctor’s’ treatment options. Which ones has he or she has used in the past year on patients? Because remember that often it’s a combination of therapies that ends up being the most effective for people.

Self-Help: Reading and applying self-help advice in the form of books, magazine articles and the like. The funny thing about self-help books is that the main ingredient in their effectiveness is the reader! Don’t expect to pickup a self-help book, read it, and expect results without any effort on your part.

Lasting and permanent help from SRI’s (for example) alone rarely cure a person of MDD (Major Depressive Disorder). There are exceptions, but usually a “cure” only happens when the patient decides he or she is going to take an active role in their own recovery.

If you are completely dedicated battling your depression, however, and not waiting for some ‘magic pill” to fix all of life’s problems, then applying what you read in self-help books can do wonders for you. The reason for this is when you take an active role in your health and not a passive role, you are already 50 percent cured before you even start! Your open-mindedness kick-starts you into gear, and makes you able to apply treatment strategies with awesome effectiveness.

Charles’s incredible survival of a suicide attempt when he was just 16 inspired him to write a controversial book to help others titled “Outsmart Your Depression By Learning More About Yourself: A Step-By-Step Guide With Extraordinary Case Studies.” To discover more about how to deal with depression go to his site at http://dealwithdepression.org/
