There are a number of problems that may arise due to teeth grinding. These include problems of the mouth, jaw and face. On some occasions, broken dentures may result or a person may lose teeth.
There are different reasons that may cause teeth grinding in an individual to take place, such as the following:
As mentioned earlier, stress is known to be the most common cause of teeth grinding taking place during sleep. Stress plays an important role in disturbing one’s sleeping patterns, and this is why an individual may clench his or her teeth during sleep, without being conscious about doing so.
Secondly, a common situation in which people clench their teeth is when they are angry. If they continue to clench teeth while they are sleeping, this would mean that they have been suppressing their anger that they have kept inside for too long. According to psychologists, this is one reason why bruxism may occur.
This also happens in children and mostly during the period when they are growing new teeth. The growth of new teeth usually accompanies unpleasantness in the mouth and jaw. In order to get relief from the undesirable feelings in the mouth, children may resort to teeth grinding.
