Reduce Driving Anxiety With These Tips
Large bridges, semi trucks, and large freeways can all bring on driving anxiety. And it seems like these attacks could happen at any time.
Driving anxiety can also affect your personal life as well because it might even force you to choose to stay at home rather than traveling to see family and friends.
If you are currently experiencing driving anxiety, here are five helpful tips for you. They have helped me decrease the amount of anxiety I feel while driving, and I think they can help you too.
1. Take a less busy road
Many people find that they can decrease anxiety levels if they travel to and from work during non-peak hours. This might mean that you have to leave for work a half hour early in order to avoid any panic attacks.
2. Listen to music
In the car try and listen to music that is peaceful. Avoid any radio stations that could possibly add to your stress or anxiety level.
3. Keep a narrow focus
Many people find that just by focusing on the yellow line or white line that they can just decrease, or prevent an anxiety attack. This is because you’re just focusing on the next section of road and are not focused on what is coming up a mile away.
4. Avoid caffeinated beverages
While many people feel that they need coffee to drive better, it is also one of the biggest causes of anxiety attacks. Remember caffeine stays in your system for many hours.
5. Have a light snack
Some people avoid eating before they drive because they know they will feel anxious. But by not eating you are actually increasing your body’s stress level.
If you’re suffering from severe driving anxiety it might be best to ride in a carpool or take a bus to work.
One way to try and get over your anxiety is to drive on freeways or highways on the weekends when they’re less busy so you’ll get used to driving on them without being anxious.
