Removing Scars: An Option for Those With Limited Budget

When people think about treating skin scars incurred by injuries and infection, they tend to associate it with those high-priced nip and tuck procedures that we see in modern media. Though it is true that these methods are indeed some of the more effective methods in helping get rid of scars, it is not a doable option for those that have limited finances. Good news is that there are alternatives, cheaper options to the costly surgical route.

But before we enumerate these cheaper yet effective options, we must first find out about the bogus methods being sold in the market.

There are a ton of products, methods and procedures out there that are easily accessible by the average person but unfortunately, most of them are bogus and do not provide any clinical proof as far as their scar treating claims are concerned.

Vitamin E-based products – there are thousands of scar removal creams and products out there that are based on one of the most popular supplements out there: vitamin E. Clinical trials performed to delve into this claim have shown negative results and have even shown probable adverse effects with about 30% of human subjects showing signs of allergic reaction to the products. Vitamin E does seem to provide moisturizing effect but no more than that.

Onion extracts-based products – a popular example of such product is Mederma which in a study has been shown to be not more beneficial than the placebo used (petroleum jelly). Experts are even advising doctors to tell their patients that onion extracts based products will neither cause harm nor benefits to their scarring issues.

Other products based on natural ingredients such as cocoa butter, aloe vera, lime juice, cucumber are likewise being sold out there to be a alternative solutions to scarring problems but neither of them have been tested clinically to prove their claims.

But other options are available, products that contain silicone as one of its ingredients, either in silicone sheets, gel or cream and they have demonstrated superb performance in treating scars especially for severe cases like keloidal and hypertrophic formations. The good thing is that there have been scientific studies that show the effectiveness of this method and so this type of treatment has been pushed as one of the best anti scarring methods out there right now.

Scar removal methods that use silicone gels and sheets are thought to be better as they do not require invasive surgical techniques and hence are rather pain-free. An additional advantage is that they relatively way more affordable compared to other effect surgical techniques. This procedure is even advantageous when done in the earlier stages of skin wound healing and is standard operating procedure in curing burns.

Improving the appearance or eliminating scars altogether does not have to be accomplished by expensive surgical methods as there are now cheaper methods that have been shown to actually work such as the silicone treatment approach.

Don’t just buy without learning more first. Don’t just get any skin care products being sold to you. Research first and know whether it is scientifically proven to be effective.
